Villa Wolax was completed in 1899 as a summer villa for Johan Oswald Wasastjerna (b. 1861 – d. 1938) and his spouse Johanna Wilhelmina Adelaide Wasastjerna (née Wrede af Elimä, b. 1868 – d. 1959).
In the 19th century, the elite of urban cultural and economic life became enthusiastic about building nature-close summer retreats as a counterbalance to city life. The location of the summer villa was chosen not only for its landscapes and closeness to nature but also with consideration of travel routes. Kuusisto might have appealed to the Wasastjernas from Helsinki because of the regular steamboat route.
VilIa Wolax is still possible to arrive by boat at Villa Wolax’s pier, but nowadays good roads bring you from Turku in just 20 minutes.
The largest villas, like Villa Wolax, were two-story buildings and often featured a veranda built on the waterside. The buildings were made decorative, and at Villa Wolax, the splendor of bygone days is reflected in the wall paintings of the living room. The landscapes of Kemiö immortalized on the walls were painted by Axel August Haartman (born 1877 – died 1969). The magnificent halls are perfect for hosting guests and organizing celebrations during the summer season. It is said that Mika Waltari (1908–1979) visited Villa Wolax during summer celebrations.
Juhlien järjestäminen on edelleen mahdollista villan entisaikojen loistokkuutta henkivässä päärakennuksessa. In addition to the villa building, other necessary structures were built at the summer retreats, such as boat sheds, pier saunas, and bathing cabins. Nowadays, at Villa Wolax, you can stay in the former Steward’s lodge
The last owner from the founding family was Johan von Wright, who owned the property until the 1970s. After a few changes of ownership, Tino Aaltonen became the owner of Villa Wolax in 1997. Aaltonen organized driving events at the Alastaro Motor Circuit and brought his clients to enjoy the sauna at Villa Wolax. The event sparked the development of business at Villa Wolax, after which the place has been carefully developed with respect for the spirit of old times.
The estate’s valuable hallmarks, park-like surroundings, and manor-style old buildings have been preserved as memories of times gone by. From the main building’s terrace, a cozy and diverse sea view opens up to the Vapparn expanse.
At Villa Wolax, we are committed to preserving the environment and the unique nature of the archipelago for today and the future. Responsibility is close to our hearts and is reflected in our everyday actions as well as in our long-term choices.
