A bit of history

A banker and a nobleman Johan Oswald Wasastjerna and his spouse Johanna Wrede built Villa Wolax near Turku in 1899 to be a summer house for their family. The villa was built on a beautiful spot in the westernmost tip of the Kuusisto Island at the shore of Vuolahti. The mansion also included separate buildings for the gardener and the driver and land around it.

The main building of Villa Wolax is in “lace” villa style: the walls are made of hefty logs and upholstered with detailed decoration. The villa was built and decorated to suit the family’s status, and a busy social life took place in its spacious salons. The story goes that even author Mika Waltari once visited a summer party at the villa.

The dignified characteristics of the 100-year-old Villa Wolax, the park-like environment and old mansion buildings have been preserved to commemorate the past times.
